Melbourne Canoe Club (MCC) provides regular and ongoing slalom coaching to paddlers from beginner to experienced levels in the form of a number of 6 and 8 week programs coinciding with school terms.
Our Paddlepower come and try program is designed for new paddlers with fun games and activities on the water.
Quickstart is the introduction to paddling and water safety.
MCC Coaching Squads are a progression from QuickStart 2, including intermediate and advanced training. Paddlers learn a variety of kayaking skills.
The RATS(Racing and Training Squad) is for advanced and committed Slalom paddlers with their own equipment.
All programs cater from Age 7 to adults.
Quickstart Program Level 1 – $70 per term (1 x 45min session per week/6 weeks)
This program is designed as an introduction to paddling on flat water. These sessions are fun and incorporate games while teaching children and adults basic paddling skills in order to develop confidence and competence on the moving water.
Quickstart Program Level 2 – $70 per term (1 x 45min session per week/6 weeks)
The Level 2 Quickstart Program is a progression from Level 1 where paddlers consolidate their basic skills and begin to paddle on the white water. Children transition to a kayak and learn to further develop their whitewater skills.

MCC Coaching Squads – $90 per term (or $130 if using club gear) (1 session per week/8 weeks)
These programs offer a range of levels to paddlers. Progression from Quick start 2, to intermediate and advanced sessions and work on stroke and water technique, incorporating slalom gates, river trips, and rolling.
You can enrol in coaching squads with or without your own gear – if needed, the MCC shed can be used to borrow equipment for your sessions.

Racing and Training Squad (RATS)
You must be a Melbourne Canoe Club Member to apply for the below coaching programs.
Progression to RATS is via recommendation of MCC coaches. Paddlers are required to have participated in MCC Coaching Squads. Must have own slalom gear.
Level 1 Rats – $180 per term (4 sessions per week/8 weeks)
This program is for paddlers who want to take their paddling to the next level and will commit to on water training three times per week and one off water fitness session. The program will include tech, Kinetics, fitness and race support at Yarra Series Competitions. Paddlers will work with their coaches and learn how to write out training plans and incorporate off water fitness into their training regime.
Level 2 Rats – $200 per term (5 sessions per week/8 weeks)
This program is offered to paddlers who have competently completed all the level 1 training and are at a level where they are ready to commit to at least four days of on water training per week and one off water fitness session. Paddlers in Level 2 will be expected to have completed an on and off water training plan (including 1-2 gym or body weight training sessions per week), with their coaches prior to commencing the term and will be assessed each term with on and off water testing.
Level 3 Rats – $220.00 per term ( 6 sessions per week/8 weeks)
All applications for Level 3 must be forwarded to Warwick Draper for approval.
This program is for paddlers who are committed to higher level of training and are committed to at least 6 days of training per week and must have competently completed level 1 & 2 programs. Level 3 paddlers will be expected complete an on and off water training plan (including 2-3 gym or body weight training sessions per week), with their coaches prior to commencing the term and will be assessed each term with on and off water testing.
